Tawang Monastery

The Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh is the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in the world, after the Potala Palace in Tibet. Perched at an elevation of 10,000 feet, this centuries-old Buddhist monastery overlooks the picturesque Tawang Valley, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Founded in the 17th century by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, it plays a pivotal role in the spiritual and cultural life of the region’s Monpa people.

The monastery is home to around 450 monks and houses a stunning three-storied assembly hall, a massive 28-foot statue of Lord Buddha, and an extensive collection of ancient manuscripts and texts. The Tawang Monastery is a significant center for Tibetan Buddhism, following the Gelugpa sect of the Mahayana school.

Tip: The best time to visit is during the Torgya Festival, a three-day celebration of rituals and dances that ward off evil spirits, typically held in January.
